Trenchless methods replace or reline a sewer line through the existing pipe, without a trench across the yard. It works on many lines but not all of them, so a camera scope should come before any decision.
A straight-trench replacement opens the yard, the driveway section, or the flower beds the line runs under. Trenchless pulls a new pipe through the old one (bursting) or cures a liner inside it, leaving the surface intact except at the access pits.
A line with a solid-enough path to pull through, failing along its length rather than at one joint, is the textbook fit. Clay lines with root intrusion through the run and cast iron failing broadly are the common trenchless jobs in the county's older neighborhoods.
A belly holding standing water stays a belly; lining follows the same sag. A collapsed section that blocks the tool's path needs open digging anyway. And a line that only needs a spot repair gets the spot repair instead. The scope footage makes the call, and a plumber who proposes trenchless without scoping first is selling the technique, not reading the line.
